The Belfast Way - Young Art from Northern Ireland". Herzeliya Museum of Contemporary
Art, Curated by Sergio Edelzstein
River Lagan is one of a series of models, all based on existing structures
in Belfast serve to donate collectively how infrastructure and the built
environment serve to delineate and even dictate a cities political dynamic
on a local scale.
Card model, 26'' x 20'' x 8'' high or 66cm x 52 cm x 21 cm
The River Lagan runs through the centre of Belfast dividing the city in a 'natural'
geographical way. It is traversed at various points by bridges. The Ormeau Rd
Bridge is interesting in that it serves to bridge and divide this section of
the city simultaneously. Above it is Ballinafeigh, a loyalist area and below
it is The Lower Ormeau Rd a nationalist area. Loyalists in previous years have
attempted to march over the bridge against the wishes of Lower Ormeau residents.
The bridge was the site of many contentious standoffs and battles, which have
been well documented.
